A trip to the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway is every racers dream. Well that dream came true for 400+ USAC .25 Midget Drivers this last weekend. A five day show that saw nearly 150 races was a success for Colt Johnson.
Wednesday started with nearly a 4 hour wait to park all the haulers and then it was time for a quick 2 minute practice session. Colt was first in line and the first car on track for the 2017 Battle at the Brickyard. Practice went great "It was a little slippery out there" said Colt Johnson after the session ended. One of the fastest cars in that group set up for what was going to be a great weekend.
Heat races were random draw and that put Colt on the Pole for the very first heat race for this years event. The race was slowed several times with cautions flags and on each occasion Colt got great starts and re starts. Taking off from the field and never looking back, becoming a race winner at Indianapolis Motor Speedway!
By winning the heat race it locked Colt into A Main 1 and once USAC Passing point were calculated he would be lined up in P2 for the feature. It was a long hard race that saw Colt spun and sent to the rear of the field, but as determined as he was he charged back to finish on the Podium with a 3rd place at IMS!
Being in Indianapolis it was an opportunity for many of colts family and friends to come see him race for the first time. "I really want to say thank you to all my family for coming to watch my races" Colt said at the end of the feature "I have had such a good time and I got to kiss the bricks!"
One of the exciting parts of the Battle at the Brickyard is the pace lap around the 2.5 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval, being able to cross the yard of bricks will be something he will remember forever.
Colt will be moving up a class in a couple weeks, with car prep and practiced planned in the meantime. His next racing action will be late July when he starts in the USAC Blue Rookie Division.
